At the foot of Ur\u0161lja gora, in the peaceful Kotlje valley, at the junction of the carbonate rocks of the Northern Karavanke and the metamorphic rocks of the Eastern Alps, a mineral water spring emerges. Through fault lines, water breaks through from the depths, feeding sandy-gravel layers and creating the characteristic “sour water,” which locals valued long before it was named Kotlje mineral water from Rimski vrelec in the 19th century.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\tThe name of the health resort, Rimski vrelec (Roman Spring), refers to a presumed Roman settlement along the Roman road between Celeia and Virunum, which passed through the Me\u017eica Valley area. Modern archaeological research has not confirmed the settlement, making it more likely that the area was named after tombstones from the Roman cemetery in Zagrad, which were transported to Kotlje after their discovery in the second half of the 19th century.\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The natural backdrop of the sub-Alpine environment, surrounded by Ur\u0161lja gora, Peca, Pohorje, and Golica (German: Koralpe), created a healing climate, attractive to patients and visitors seeking help in treating chronic diseases. The flourishing iron industry in nearby Gu\u0161tanj (today Ravne na Koro\u0161kem), Prevalje, \u010crna, and Me\u017eica, along with the construction of new road connections and the Celovec\u2013Maribor railway line in 1863, accelerated the development of the health resort and facilitated easier access to the areas beneath Ur\u0161lja gora. By the end of the 19th century, Rimski vrelec became a popular excursion and health resort destination, accessible on foot, by carriage, and later by modern means of transport.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
